Detox 101: Do detox baths work?

It might seem that everyone is toxic. That may be true to differing degrees. Problems with detoxification is one root of illness. If you feel lousy, it’s likely you’re toxic.”

– Mark Hyman, MD, Functional Medicine Expert

Greetings, all! The weather has been lovely yesterday and today, and seems to be looking up in terms of the weekend – yay! Not that we don’t mind a little bit of frost.. especially when that frost commences BATH SEASON! Now, if you’re like me, the thought of spending time running bath water just to lay in it for 30 minutes and then drain it away can sometimes seem like a waste of your time. However, once you hear about the amazing detoxifying benefits to the body and mind, and how incredibly healing bath salts can really be, I promise you that you will be purposefully setting aside that extra hour per week for bath-time!

So.. what’s the deal with all of these popular “detox baths”, aromatherapy baths, and bath salts in general anyway?

The main burden as a result of the toxins we are exposed to is its effect on our body’s ability to naturally detox. The more toxins we are exposed to, the harder the body has to work at eliminating these toxins. No matter how you begin your day, you will probably be putting chemicals into your body in some way. Most soaps and shampoos are full of chemicals, the toothpaste could contain fluoride, even your breakfast food may have been treated with pesticides and genetically modified. You have barely gotten out of bed, yet you have been exposed to toxins that can potentially cause ailment. While it is totally impossible to get rid of ALL toxins, we can definitely improve our body’s efficiency and ability to eliminate them!

How toxic ARE you anyway? Click here for a quick quiz to help determine how urgent your need to detox is!

Flowers to Fragrance‘s signature bath salts are made of two different types of salt:

  • Himalayan Pink Salt: This type of salt is a naturally harvested salt with little to no refinement, therefore there are amounts of essential minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium within it.
  • Epsom Salt: Epsom salt isn’t really a salt at all; it’s actually a mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate. This mighty combination makes epsom salt a natural miracle for the mind, body, and soul.

A detox bath encourages the body to efficiently flush out toxins.

Magnesium is one of the most abundant mineral in our bodies, an important element for the regulation of your immune system! However, we are almost always chronically deficient in it. Most peoples diet and lifestyle choices deplete our bodies magnesium. This is why bath salts are incredibly beneficial: they allow magnesium absorption straight through the skin!

Here are just a few things you will notice as the magnesium levels in your body regulate:

  • Ease stress
  • Flushes toxins from the body
  • Relieves pain and inflammation
  • Regulates muscle and nerve function
  • Prevents blood clots and hardening of arteries
  • Makes insulin more effective
  • Relieves constipation
  • Reduce symptoms of morning sickness

All in all – detox baths are amazingly beneficial and well-worth it, regardless of age, ailment, or skin type!

How to take a detox bath with bath salts:

The first step is to schedule yourself at least 40 minutes, as you need about 20 minutes to remove the toxins, and for the remainder the body absorbs the minerals in the bath water.
Fill up your bath with warm water.  Add in 1-2 scoops of bath salts. If your bath water is not filtered, add a bit of baking soda as this helps neutralize the chemicals, primarily chlorine, as well as increase mineral absorption. (Our bath salts already have baking soda in them!) Wait for salts to dissolve, and enter the tub. 40 minutes later, exit as a new person!
